#FlashbackFriday: A Driving Tour of Ireland

I've been thinking about Ireland a lot lately, so for this Flashback Friday post I thought I'd share with you some pictures from the 12-day driving tour we took in November 2009. We began our trip in Dublin and then made our way to Thomastown, just outside Kilkenny, then traveling on to Cobh, Tralee, Cong, Belfast, and back to Dublin. We were a little overzealous in our planning, not wanting to miss a single thing, and so we managed to pack in *a lot* in a little less than two weeks. The trip was made even more complicated when a storm ravaged the entire country, flooding cities, washing out roads, and generally wreaking a whole lot of havoc with our plans. We didn't get much sleep during the trip which made for some incredibly tiring days, but it was an amazingly wonderful experience and one that I cherish.

  1. Oh my goodness, these photos are breathtaking!!! I would love to do a road trip through Ireland one day. How was the weather in November? It looks like it was nice from the photos!

  2. The weather was ... well. Honestly? It was awful. :-)

Our first couple of days in Dublin were great, Kilkenny was great, but when we got down to Cork we were hit with what they were calling the worst storm in 1000 years. The River Lee had jumped its banks and the whole city was flooded. Then we kept getting detoured because roads were washed out. Trying to get up to Ashford Castle was scary because it was pitch black and there were people trying to keep the lough from overflowing onto the roadway. It took us several hours to get from Galway to Cong. Weather in Belfast was cold and brisk and lovely - my favorite. Basically, the southern half of the country was a nightmare. :-)
