Crate & Barrel furniture

I told Alan the other day that after 6 years of sleeping on our faux wrought iron Ikea bed that I want a grown up bed. I don't have to have it now, but I want us to start looking at options and thinking about what we want to get in the coming year.

I know I don't want something that has too much of a foot board as we will otherwise use it to hang our random clothes on and that drives me nuts. I want something that is wood. And I think I want something that has a nice wood frame (not just a headboard and foot board).

While I've long obsessed about a couple of beds from Pottery Barn, it never occurred to me to also look at Crate & Barrel. Do any of you have beds from C&B? If so, what's your take? Is the quality good?

Here are two designs that I especially like.

  1. I have the Cabot bedroom set from Crate and Barrel (now discontinued, and not the Cabot II, also discontinued). We purchased it four years ago. It is wonderful stuff, hardwood furniture crafted by Copeland Furniture of Vermont. This is *real* furniture and it had the price tag to match. We have an insanely heavy mattress, and we did have a problem with the bed not being designed to support it. One of the slats broke about a month later. I got on the phone with the furniture manufacturer, and they had someone over promptly to take a look. It turned out something had been installed improperly which caused the problem, and we haven't had a problem since. Still, when it comes time to replace the mattress, I think I may try to get a lighter one.

We got the bed, a dresser, a chest, and two nightstands. Prior to that, we had (I am not making this up) chrome and black lacquer furniture that my husband bought on clearance from Sears that already had two broken drawers when he bought it. It was the ugliest stuff in the world.

It has a very timeless design, and I am the type of person who will be happy to keep that furniture forever, and I expect to. At that price tag, it's not something you will swap out to get a fresher look.

(By the way, my husband lived on the road for, like, 10 years, and we traded in a ton of the AmEx points he'd earned buying plane tickets, hotel rooms, and rental cars to get Crate and Barrel gift certificates to buy this stuff. I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger otherwise, but I haven't regretted it for a second.)

  2. Good information Katy! I know so many people that have Pottery Barn furniture (us included) so that's always my default but lately I've been really liking what I see in the SF store. The more I look at the first bed up top the more I love it. It's pricey, to be sure, but given that we've had this crappy Ikea bed for as many years as we have, I imagine I could have this bed for triple that at least. Because it's pretty simple and straightforward it could be in any house we wind up in throughout the years I would think.

Hi Kathy: I'm trying to find where I can buy used pieces of the Cabot set.  I have the big dresser and a night stand, but need another night stand and dresser.  Any thoughts?

    1. Hi Kalan - not sure if you are able to see/check this blog post, but we have a Cabot wide 10-drawer dresser, matching armoire and one night stand that we are looking to sell! We are in Manhattan. If you are still looking, please let me know how to reach you: lisa dot levenson at gmail dot com. Thanks!
