RAISING THE BAR

Several weeks ago now I mentioned on Twitter that we had gotten a new-to-us hand-me-down chest of drawers from my in-laws' garage. Our best guess is that it's a piece that was made in the 60s. They were talking about getting rid of it but I knew I could put it to use somewhere in our house. Initially I wanted to have it in our entry hall but it was too deep for the space I had it intended for. And then I got the idea to put it just inside the dining room as a place to store the blankets we use on the couch in the winter, but it looked really bare. So then I we moved the liquor from across the room to create a new bar space. And then we added a mirror I got on deep discount from Joss & Main (it arrived severely damaged, but you can't see it when its hung and it seems sturdy enough so I didn't feel like going through the hassle of returning it). I'm iffy on this particular lamp but we've had it forever, and it's free, so that's what's there for now. Eventually I'd like to get something a bit sleeker that still has a pop of white.

With this post the cat's also out of the bag that we've painted the dining room the same navy blue as the living room. We are so happy with how this color looks in various lights. I'm just sad that it took us over five years to find this color. So many paint mishaps over the years led to this. I was hoping to do a big dramatic "before & after" with the old paint color and the new one, but it's taking me forever to get the whole room set up. We have a few other projects that are going on and I don't think they'll be done in the next two weekends, so the big reveal is going to have to wait.

Edited to add:

Someone asked me (offline) if the bar is for show or if we really drink that liquor. I know a lot of people who have had that one bottle of Kahlua in their cabinets for years after a random party they threw, so I understand the question, but nope - all of this liquor is consumable and will likely be replenished at some point in 2012. We drink more of it than others - Bulleit bourbon (and Bulleit Rye), St. George Single Malt Whiskey, Laphroig. Some of the bottles are novelty items in that they're only for specialty drinks, or were purchased on a whim, like Root and Ginger Snap, but we drink those too, I assure you. In fact, we've gone through both of those much more quickly than the other bottle I bought at the same time, Firelit Coffee Liquor (also from St. George). And everyone laughs at me when I tell them - completely straight-faced and in all seriousness - I love Jagermeister.

  6. haha, so, I pinned that photo on pinterest (That's an ok thing to do, right? I'm still fuzzy on the etiquette of that place) and someone re-pinned it saying they loved the lamp. So, I guess you've got one vote for keeping it.
