W(H)INING ABOUT STORAGE

So, the lease is signed and we're locked in for our condo move. A huge weight has been lifted from my mind and now we can focus on packing and getting ready for the move and the sale of the house. Well, that and obsessing about decorating the new place, of course.

I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit worried about storage. Our current basement is 1500+ square feet of open space. We've barely put a dent in that space with what we have down there. But ... a whole corner is devoted to our wine. We aren't huge collectors or anything, but we don't mess around. I mean, you've seen this picture.

That's just the haul for ONE of our three or four trips up to wine country.  So yeah, wine storage. That's going to be a big problem for us.

We have a storage closet down the hallway from the condo, but we share it with another resident. I'm okay with having someone I don't know having access to something like my camping gear, or my winter clothes. But my wine? That's liquid gold. I can just picture someone helping themselves to a bottle here and there. My favorite bottles, of course. (It's true, I have very little faith in humanity.)

So we're going to need a storage solution for inside our condo. We have a giant walk-in closet in the master bedroom that we can probably store a few cases in, but I don't want to take up too much space there as we're going to be consolidating three closets into one. I think we'll probably need a piece of furniture that stores 48+ bottles. I've been doing some looking and as you can imagine there's not a lot out there that is both large and pretty that isn't exorbitantly expensive. I've also been surprised at how few bottles most "wine storage" pieces of furniture hold. Who spends $600 on a cabinet that holds 24 bottles?

Here's what I've found so far. I'm not really in love with any of it. The sad thing is when we were married we received three Pottery Barn wine cubes that matched our Nantucket message center. We still have the message center but we got rid of the wine cubes. They would have been a good (free) start!

  1. I love the look of option 3 but don't think it's the best way to properly store wine. :/

  2. Yeah, I'm thinking if we go this route that'll just be for the bottles that we plan to drink within the month.

  3. hmmm...do you think something like the expedit from ikea will work? You could try and build in some dividers or stack them similar to #1 (but obviously in a square instead of a diamond)

  4. We'll have an Expedit in the office which is somewhat visible from the foyer. Also, I think the space is too narrow for something that large.

Also, we're terrible at building things. :-)

  6. they have racks that look like option two (which is my favorite, for what it's worth) on overstock for under $200. Can't attest to the quality though....

You may want to think climate controlled - like vinotemp, rather than just furniture - your cellar probably cool - nice constant wine storage - but I don't think home temps - especially where light can get it is great - we have one fridge that stores about 30 bottles and another than stores about 200 - super handy - pricier I admit - but once I really started buying wine (and had a couple bottles overheat!), it seemed like a good investment....

  9. We had a wine fridge for a few years but it broke so we've never replaced it. I wonder if one would fit in our shared storage unit. Then at least I could more readily gauge if something went missing.

Darn, I saw another option from Target I liked right after submitting: the Gallagher Modular Dining Storage, $94 a piece. The modular wine cabinet holds 24 bottles, and they also sell a coordinating cabinet for glasses.
